Marco Asensio set to sign new Real Madrid contract

Marco Asensio is expected to renew his contract with Real Madrid.

The Spanish player, who has been at the Santiago Bernabeu for seven years, has been in negotiations with the club since the start of the year and has a proposal on the table to extend his current deal, which was signed in 2017 and expires this summer in 2023.

“We will come to an agreement,” a source involved in the negotiations told The Athletic, speaking anonymously to protect their position.

For their part, sources at Madrid also believe Asensio, 27, will stay beyond the summer, a situation influenced by the voice of Carlo Ancelotti, who has told the club several times that he wants Asensio to stay on.

Instead, what is being negotiated is the length of Asensio’s new deal, which will be for either four or five years, until 2027 or 2028, as well as salary conditions, with agreement on that front not yet reached.

“With Real Madrid, if the player is relatively young, the length of renewals are usually like that,” said the same source involved in negotiations.

However, for the moment, the deal has not been sealed and other voices from the club point out that they do not want this issue to interfere at this stage of the competition, with Madrid playing in the quarter-finals of the Champions League and having reached the final of the Copa del Rey, despite being 13 points behind Barcelona in La Liga.

It is in La Liga where Asensio has contributed most to Madrid’s season so far, scoring five goals in his last 10 games in the domestic competition. In total he has managed eight goals and six assists this term, despite not being a starter and only playing 1,376 minutes in all competitions, according to Transfermarkt.

While negotiations have developed, unnamed Premier League clubs and other clubs in Italy, such as AC Milan, who have been following Asensio for a year, and Juventus, have shown an interest, according to sources close to the player.

But, despite this, Asensio’s intention is to remain at Madrid and his decision will now depend on finalising negotiations over his new terms with the club, with all parties involved optimistic of agreement.
